Our Winter Beach

Our crafty projects have gotten the best of us. Thanks to a website that I actually like immensely (www.theartfulparent.com), I decided (in an act of desperation) to try pouring a canister of wheat berries into a tupperware and give the kids cups and play mobile people to stick in the berries and just have a great time.  I told them it was ok if they made a mess and trusted in my website's promise that a "few swift sweeps with the vacuum" would clean it all up.

Taylor was over playing and he didn't buy into it all. I told him it was ok to make a mess and he responded that "No I can't".  Jane and Spencer thought it was great fun and threw wheat around the kitchen and had a great sensory activity.  I'm sure when their I.Q. scores are way above average because of this sensory experience, I will feel better about the 30 extra minutes I spent cleaning up wheat from every nook and cranny of the kitchen.  But, really, it was a good time and it almost felt like we were at the beach, walking on crunchy sand and such.

The next day or so, Jane was entertained for almost an hour with the 300 feet of toilet paper Spencer pulled off the roll while I was changing Jane's diaper. She made little balls and put them in her corner and put other toilet paper in a pile as a game. Jane thought it was so nice of Spencer to pull the all that paper off the roll for her to play with.

Jane has been a really good helper and can do a lot of things by herself.  She can wash her hands, put on her socks and shoes and even her coat sometimes, she helps put laundry away (when coaxed) and was nice to help me clean the bathroom when she wasn't busy playing with Spencer's generous gift.

And I just wanted to record photos of these beautiful dolls.  My friend Jennifer made them for Jane (in honor of Spencer's birth, even though he is older now). They are beautiful and we call them the "sisters".  It was a nice act of love from a friend. I am always amazed at how much love I feel any time someone does anything nice for me or family. How really generous that my friend took time to make something so great for Jane when my friend is so busy herself. It just reminded me of how much capacity we have to bless the lives of our friends.  Thank you, Jennifer!

  1. I'm so impressed my child opted out of the mess. That doesn't happen around here. In fact, as of last week, he was still behaving like Spenc--and unrolled an entire roll of toilet paper himself. Down the halls, through rooms, etc.
